Philip Barnes
Philip Barnes has brought a new vigor to the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus since his appointment in 1989, with the establishment of various traditions, from a commitment to the a cappella repertoire, to the practice of marrying music to its setting, acoustically and culturally. Philip Barnes's education was steeped in the English choral tradition, and he sang in various cathedral choirs before coming to St. Louis in 1988 to chair the Classics Department at John Burroughs School. Prior to his move to the States he studies at Bristol and Manchester Universities, and King's College, London; he holds a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts, and has lectured on music and various classical topics throughout Britain and the USA. Barnes conducted the St. Louis Chamber Chorus for the recording of Rome's Golden Poets (St. Louis Chamber Choir and Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, 1999).
