“Terence Tunberg and Milena Minkova’s Latin for the New Millennium (‘LNM’) is a strikingly original and decidedly effective text for introductory Latin. In it, the authors claim to strike a balance between the inductive, or reading method, and the deductive method commonly used in Greek and Latin instruction, and they are successful in that. Though they do not mention it explicitly, they have also transcended the cultural aspirations of most reading-based texts with their successful adaptation of original passages to the needs of beginning Latin students, helping students to see for themselves some of what Latin literature has to offer them.”

“Hot off the presses from Bolchazy-Carducci, Latin for the New Millennium (ISBN 0865165602) is a unique and innovative two-year Latin program suitable for both high school and university students. Authored by gifted Latinists Milena Minkova and Terence Tunberg, and edited by veteran teacher LeaAnn Osburn, this series takes an entirely different perspective from other textbooks. Unlike recent series that center on a single family or story, LNM’s organizing principle is the story of the Latin language itself—from the second century BCE through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and modern world.”

“Bolchazy-Carducci has added to its Latin for the New Millennium series with a set of Level II text and workbooks. The course teaches Latin by reading real Latin passages, exploring the use of Latin after the fall of Rome, and presenting cultural insights. It includes paradigms and review exercises, designed to meet modern teaching standards, while being equally suitable for autodidacts.”

Teacher Reviews

“I never thought at my age and experience (62 years old and 41 years teaching) I would have the chance to try out a new Latin text, let alone a great one. It used to be that students only started reading Latin authors in the original after at least a year and a half of study. With LNM, they start on day one.”

“We have used LNM for our Latin elective course. The students find it student-friendly and enjoyable. Their strongest skill is Latin-to-English translation, and I feel good about how much they’ve learned.”

“It has been so much fun to teach LNM 2. The book brings Latin’s continuity through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and beyond to life for students.
The selections and discussions have enriched their understanding of history, art, and music. This is not your mother’s second-year Latin book!”
