Themes Connecting Caesar and Vergil - April 16, 2013, 6:00–7:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Professor Pendergraft is much respected by her university colleagues, her students, and her high school colleagues for her scholarship and her insights into pedagogy. Her presentation will explore themes that connect Caesar and Vergil, the two writers united by the new AP curriculum. Dr. Pendergraft has served as a state and national consultant on Latin curriculum and standards. She performed yeoman service as the Chief Reader for AP Latin for four years and as a contributor to the development of the new curriculum. Her topic was suggested by fall webinar participants and filled fast when offered earlier this year. This webinar will be an excellent learning opportunity as teachers prepare review activities and lessons for AP Latin.

Learn about this landmark project, a joint ACTFL (Sherwin served on the development committee) and ACL undertaking, and its relevance to your Latin teaching. ALIRA is designed to give a proficiency rating to anyone learning Latin, whether student or teacher. This webinar will present how ALIRA is administered and what it measures. We will discuss interpretive reading, look at sample questions, and consider implications for using the assessment as an outside measure of student achievement.

Learn how LNM 3, designed for the broad range of students who take Latin 3, provides a comprehensive introduction to the major Roman authors and to literary analysis.

Google Earth for the Latin Classroom - May 21, 2013 6:00–7:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)

Learn how to enhance lectures, class discussions, and student projects using Google Earth, a program that allows users to view satellite imagery, maps, and terrain. This presentation focuses on ideas for student projects to accompany Latin for the New Millennium and the new AP* Latin syllabus. The presentation concludes with an overview of how to use the tools and features of the Google Earth program. Teachers can add zest to the end of the year with Google Earth projects or use this information as a springboard for developing projects this summer for next year’s classes.
