This Latin reader offers seven poems (596 lines total) selected from the work of Albius Tibullus, one of the three canonical love elegists from the Augustan period. Selections include poems 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, 1.9, 2.1, and 2.3. The selections are representative of the Tibullan oeuvre as a whole: poems on pastoral themes; poems concerned with both of his mistresses, Delia and Nemesis; poems illustrating the homoerotic tendencies in the corpus; and poems dedicated to his patron, Messalla Corvinus. The largest group come from those concerned with Delia, since these are more numerous and display a greater narrative complexity. Each selection features a commentary that not only offers grammatical and historical information but also aids in understanding the poet's unique style and will elucidate the often difficult and complex logic of these poems. SIGNIFICANCE/FEATURES: Paul Allen Miller is Carolina Distinguished Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature.
