Called by Renaissance humanist Conrad Celtes "the German Sappho," Hrotswtha (ca. 935-1000) was a prolific author who wrote eight legends in verse, two historical epics, and six plays in rhymed prose. A corrected reprint of the 1979 New York University Press edition, this book contains translations of Gallicanus, Dulcitius, Callimachus, Abraham, Paphnutius, and Sapientia.
Larissa Bonfante received her BA in fine arts ad classics at Barnard College in 1954, her MA in classics from the University of Cincinnati in 1957, and her PhD in art history and archaeology from Columbia University in 1966. She is currently Professor of Classics at New York University. Her other publications include Etruscan Dress(1975), Etruscan Life and Afterlife: A Handbook of Etruscan Studies (1986) and Reading the Past Etruscan (1990). |
